Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
— Margaret Mead.

Thanks to the leadership of Maggie Molera Stodghill, Campaign Chair of the 2023 Campaign, the United Way of Virginia’s Eastern Shore (UWVES) was very successful and raised over $257,000.00. This brings the total amount raised throughout the years to over $8,400,000.00.  These donations have allowed the United Way to provide local nonprofits funding for their much-needed services.

A special thank you needs to go the Businesses who host a workplace campaign. Almost 50 % of the donations are raised in workplace campaigns.  Coordinators at these businesses, take time out of their busy schedules to make a difference in our local community. Each campaign embraces the idea that anyone – regardless of income – can become a philanthropist and give their money or time to solve our community’s biggest problems.  No matter what you choose to give, these companies and their coordinators will help more children and families in our community thrive. When businesses host workplace campaigns, they create opportunities for their employees to improve the communities where they live and work.  It is really what living united is all about.

Donations can be donor allocated to a nonprofit of their choice or designated to the Community Impact Fund.  This fund is created through workplace campaign contributions and individual donations.  Awards are determined by the Allocation committee which is composed of 10 volunteers from diverse backgrounds.  The group reviewed grant applications and budgets before making recommendations for allocation of the funds.

Grants were awarded to 26 nonprofits in Accomack and Northampton counties through a competitive application process. The organizations that were awarded were very solid, showed great programs that benefit the Shore with strong outcomes.  Organizations selected for funding display strong financial and program accountability, impact identified community needs and collaboration with other organizations.

Today funding from Allocations include:

·        Eastern Shore Coalition Against Domestic Violence to provide critical needs of survivors of sexual assault and domestic violent and funding for their new shelter

·        Mama Café CI for funding to serve free hot meals, including housebound individuals

·        Dos Santos Food Pantry for food distribution

·        Scholarships for summer camps.  These scholarships provide an opportunity for children that they would never experience.  Camps can be life changing.

·        Boys and Girls Club for their after-school programs.

·        ESAAA to help fund the Meals on Wheels which is losing funding from other sources

·        ESCC Foundation to fund healthy food choices for students

·        ES Family YMCA for swimming classes so all children on this Eastern Shore can learn to swim

·        Smart Beginnings to fund one year of Go and Grow Starter Packs for newborns

·        No Limits to support a weekly exercise group, called the United Way Exercise Group, for survivors of brain injury and other individuals with disabilities on the Eastern Shore.

·        Children’s Harbor to provide safe and quality childcare, increase school performance and provide after school activities for children 5 to 10

·        Eastern Shore Art League of Virginia to fund an interactive art experience for both local youths and adults

·        Mary Nottingham Smith for after school activities and improvements to spaces for those activities

We can never thank our sponsors enough.  Sponsorships ensures campaign expenses are underwritten and donor dollars are wisely invested in creating impact in our community in the areas of Education, Financial Stability, and Healthy Living.  The businesses who generously support the United Way of Virgnia’s Eastern Shore, make sure that more donations fund the services so needed on the Shore.

Each dollar helps to make a greater impact on the quality of life for residents on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
